The War of Polish Succession

War Name : The War of Polish Succession

Date(s) : 01 February 1733 - 18 November 1738

Summary

Following the death of Augustus II, two claimants the the throne of Poland emerged. Stanislas Leszczynski was the choice of the Polish aristocracy, and since he was Louis XV of France's Father-in-Law, had French backing too. Augustus's son, Augustus III, also Elector of Saxony, was supported by Russia and Austria. What began as a dynastic dispute therefore spread into civil war, then european war in Italy and the Rhineland before Augustus gained the upper hand. France, prefering to gain a favourable peace persuaded Leszczynski to abdicate the Polish throne and accept the title of Duke of Lorraine ending the war with the Treaty of Vienna in 1738
