General Friere commanded three Spanish divisions holding a ridge near the monastery of San Marcial. Three divisions of Reille's corps attacked across the fords at 8 am. They were beaten back. At noon they attacked again with strong artillery support but were again repulsed. In late afternoon Soult called off the attack and withdrew. The other prong of Soult's two pronged attack across the Bidassoa was repulsed by the British. This was the last attempt by Soult to get back into Spain.
