Again a day of mixed fortunes with rather more failed attacks than gains. However all counter-attacks were replused.

XIV Corps. The 35th Division failed in their attempt to take a strong point opposite Arroow Head Copse. The 24th Division occupied most of ZZ Trench leading to Guillemont. An attack on the quarry was forced back in a bombing duel. A thrust southeast from the station could not be held because of losses received.
XV Corps. 14th Divisions attempt to advance into Delville Wood was stopped by rifle and machine gun fire. 33rd Division fared no better in their attempt to take the trench running from Wood Lane eastwards.
Anzac Corps. Although the 1st Australian division's attacks got well forward they were forced to withdraw by a mixture of bombing and machine gun fire.
II Corps. The main successes of the day fell to 48th Divsion who gained the entrance to the Hindenburg Trench and took Lemburg Trench to increase their hold on the Leipzig Salient. Early morning of the 22nd August the Germans mounted four counter-attacks all of which were replused.
