Summary : This very strong fortress, its garrison commanded by Maresciallo di Campo Begani, a devoted follower of Murat, was stoutly but pointlessly defended. The sea side was blockaded by a British naval squadron. 1,762 men were left to be taken prisoner at the surrender.
